Is eBay right for my brand?

Apr 22, 2021    |     eBay, Marketplaces, News

This question must be one of the most common objections we hear from brands and retailers when we take them through their marketplace audit and opportunity report.

We get it, eBay Australia has been around for a longtime (in tech years), created in early 1990’s it was a platform predominantly created for what come to coin the term “mum and dad sellers”.

Majority of listings and sales were second hand and obscure items – for example someone tried to sell a piece of toast, that had the in-print of Jesus.

Fast forward to today and some of the most recognizable brands and retailers are now leveraging the huge traffic of shoppers that visit eBay Australia on a monthly basis (+11M per month)

In the last 5 years, eBay have changed focus and the new strategy is, becoming  Australia’s brand marketplace.

Todays look and feel is completely different, with a focus on curated content and shopper experience.

  • +90% of sales are new items
  • Brands: Adidas, Reebok, Dyson, DELL, Nespresso, Kathmandu, New balance and many more.
  • Aussie made category: eBay is  supporting Australian brands, newly created Aussie made category. Available to all Australian made products.
  • Australia’s top 10 most visited site overall per month.

The question we ask brands and retailers after sharing this information: “Is your brand equity more valuable than these brands?”

In addition one piece of advice when considering your marketplace strategy  – do not plan in channel – plan in channels, more is always more.
